I spiraled down and away, the lacy greenery offering a brief refuge, a comfort for my fluttering heart. I spread my wings and floated through the tree canopy, my heart pounding against my chest. It was wonderful all at once, but there was no time to ponder. I landed on the forest floor and, with fire in my heart, became myself again.

“Holy shit. Sweet mother of Jesus, I did it.” I hugged myself, rocking back and forth. Fear fueled this change. Was that what it took? I didn’t like being scared. A shudder ran through me—a wave of nausea. I lurched forward, digging my hands into the ground, and retched, expelling the fear, shame, and disgust. It was all too real.

“Rioghain, my dearest. Did you think I wouldn’t come for you? Where have you gotten to, little one? Your heart calls to mine, you see, as it always will,” Balor whispered from somewhere deep within the shadowy woods.

My heart stuttered. No—I screamed inside my head. How could it be? How had he escaped Cian’s blade? Was his power that great?

The pine thicket sheltered me, providing safety from my pursuer. I pressed against the rough bark, concealing myself within the greenery.

“I saw you soaring on such fine, silken wings, and it filled me with pride to see you return to your familiar form, flying with the wind. We will cross the currents of time, from this world to the next—as we will in Ulaid—no, what am I saying? The entire land. Do you hear me? Did you think that a halfling prince could fight my will?” His crazed rant sent shivers down my spine. He observed the quiet woods, tilting his head and waiting for my next move.

How did he find me? Oh, please tell me we are not the same. This was not the man who made love to me in my dreams. My chest heaved, and my lungs burned. I turned away from the confusion. I would not let him win this battle.

I exhaled a deep breath as the darkness lifted, giving way to blue twilight. The mist drifted through the old-growth forest, cloaking the ground with ghostly fingers.

“Let us begin our life together, my sweet Rioghain. The shadows you call upon will not hide you forever,” his voice rose in a smug retort.

I dared not move. I dared not rustle my skirt. I pressed my hands over my mouth, trying not to scream. What was once a beautiful ball gown was now torn and hanging in shreds. Denying him had brought me to this place. A storm of emotions surged within me. Blind trust had allowed this to happen—an illusion that persuasion held power. Who was I to believe that feminine charm could change the mind of a psychotic person?

I suspected my earlier vision would come true, and at any moment, I would see Finvarra’s death. Balor planned to take his place as High King and ruler of the realm, and his sick mind had decided he needed me to do his bidding.
